#3 GR5/GR55 – The Northern Alps (Lake Geneva to Briançon)

Day 8 – Les Contamines to Plan de la Lai (25km; 1540m / 830m)
Day 9 – Plan de la Lai to Refuge du Col de Palet through Landry (57 km; 2410m / 520m )

Day 8

GR5 GR55 the Northern Alps Lake Geneva to Briancon1Your next trip from Les Contamines will start with a nice riverside walk. You will then need to make a steep climb through woods to a waterfall and get out into an open beautiful meadow. Later on, you will pass several refuges and your route will climb through a landscape that features large boulders. The route will allow you to tackle the Col du Bonhomme (2329m). It could get windy on the top, so make sure you are prepared. You will cross the col and enter the department of Savoie. Later on, this will be the highlight of your day. You will be able to enjoy the possibility of hiking along the top of the Crête des Gittes. Although you will be exposed to a wind and a relatively narrow path, you will enjoy some breathtaking views on either side. You can choose to get down to a refuge for the evening. Or you can choose to continue your path by cutting up a small hill. You would then walk along grassy slopes around the flank of a mountain. You will also be able to enjoy some good views back to the Crête des Gittes and down to a lake. You will then pass a few farm buildings and climb past grazing cattle and a waterfall. This will lead you to a higher landscape covered in boulders. Then, you will make a slow but not too difficult ascent that will lead you to the Col du Bresson (2469m). You can spend the night in a Refuge de la Balme or in the village of Le Valezan, just make sure you check the dates of the season.

Day 9

GR5 GR55 the Northern Alps Lake Geneva to Briancon2GR5 GR55 the Northern Alps Lake Geneva to Briancon3Your day will begin crossing a few ski slopes, as the route will take you along the mountainside. Later on, you will reach a steep descent that goes through forest and the cliffs. Your route will lead you to a few small villages by the river. You will then experience one much gentler climb up the valley to enter the Parc national de la Vanoise. As you enter the park, the path rises through tress and some in between boulders. On your way up, it is possible that you will pass a few of hunters with their rifles that slung across their shoulders. Your path will level out into an alpage. You will soon cross the Col du Palet (2600m). The route will then lead you to a steady descent to the ski villages of Tignes and Val Claret. They are situated in a very attractive setting by the Lac de Tignes. Its waters reflect beautiful snow that covers mountain tops. Tignes is described as a “Benidorm-like resort”, because it is made up of ski-chalets and rise hotels.
