Day 10

GR5 GR55 the Northern Alps Lake Geneva to Briancon5From this point, you can take the route GR55. It is still high-level but shorter hike in the Vanoise. There is this two hour climb to the Col de la Laisse (2755m). You will then enter the national park and cross a landscape which is lacks vegetation. It will head you towards the fascinating ice peak of La Grande Motte. Later on, you walk alongside a few lakes that are surrounded by a rock. Walk down some grassy slopes and you will reach a reservoir. Let yourself enjoy some seasonal colours of the vegetation and the waters; notice the sharp contrast between the snow on the top and the changing colours below. You can spend the evening in the Refuge d’Entre Deux Eaux.

Day 11

GR5 GR55 the Northern Alps Lake Geneva to Briancon6Your very next day begins with fascinating high mountain passes of the Col de La Vanoise and the Col de la Laisse. Take a half hour climb, and you will reach the military bunker. The path will then open out onto a flat landscape that is dominated by icy peaks. You may pass a herd. You can stop at the Refuge du Col de la Vanoise for a short break if you want. There is this rocky path downhill from the refuge. You will cross a lake that is dried out. You will then get downhill along ski runs and forest. You will reach the ghost town of Pralognan. A slow climb up to the valley will lead you back to the national park and your refuge for the evening.

Day 12

GR5 GR55 the Northern Alps Lake Geneva to Briancon7Your day begins by climbing to steep and stony slopes up to the Col de Chavière, which may be the highest point (2800m) of this whole journey. You will cross an alpage with views of icy peaks of Péclet-Polset. As you get higher up, the path will cross grassy, bouldery slopes that are covered in piles of rocks. The path disappears as you approach to the top. Later on, there is a need for scrambling over slabs of limestone and across the rock. But the panoramic view is worth it. Going downhill will be much easier. You will get amazed by the views of three waterfalls across the valley. Pass one of the springs named Source du Vin. Its water is refreshing and ice cold. Continue with a long walk through forests and some small villages before entering the urban area of Modane / Fourneaux. It serves the main freight line between Italy and France. You will manage to find some hotels of interest in this area. There are some local newsagents that sell guides of the trek.
