Rascafaria – Carro del Diablo

monasterio-el-paular

If you’ll be in the central part of Spain, for example, in Madrid, then head for Rascafaria – Carro del Diablo route of 14km. Rascafria is one of the prettiest villages of the region, with the interesting Monastery Santa Maria del Paular close by.

From Rascafria you‘ll climb steadily along easy trail with wonderful views across the surrounding country and lakes, passing through oak forest with free-ranging cattle and wild pigs. The finish line of the walk comes out from the pine forest and finally you‘ll reach the rocks called Carro del Diablo. The story goes that the rocks were intended to be used in the final stages of the construction of nearby Segovia’s cathedral. However, the Devil intervened and the rocks remained here, untouched. From this point the narrow footpath winds downwards, again through oak and eventually emerging in open country only a short way from Rascafria once more.

starting point: Rascafaria
route length: 14 km
highlights: Monastery Santa Maria del Paular, oak forest, free-ranging cattle and wild pigs, pine forest, Carro del Diablo rocks.
finish point: from Carro del Diablo back to Rascafaria
