Founded in 1914, the Swiss National Park is the oldest in the Alps. The nature here is strictly protected, so humans remain in the background and are only witnesses of this beautiful evolution. The Alpine landscape remains much the same as it was 5,000 years ago. Hunting, tree felling, meadow mowing or any other human activities deemed to interfere with nature are banned. This allows you to enjoy the sounds and views of the wild nature at its best. A wide variety of paths offers a wide range of degrees of difficulty.
The National Park is well-known for its particularly extraordinary variety of animals and plants. Say hello to a deer, a nutcracker bird (park’s symbol), golden eagles, ibexes, marmots, northern hares, chamois, lizards and many other beautiful birds. A host of alpine plants features a colourful sight as visitors make their way through the Park. Cooling pine forests or a stroll through meadows filled with countless Alpine flowers are simply breathtaking.
Your eyes will give you a beautiful experience watching the snowy tops and mountain spring streams everywhere.
1 August 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Swiss National Park. The Park was established by a handful of pioneers and visionaries who set a stunning example for the protection of Switzerland’s mountain landscape. Their vision was to ensure that this piece of a landscape develops entirely naturally, and that any changes should be the subject of a scientific research.
The anniversary will offer many jubilee-year activities. For example, Open-air spectacle LAINA VIVA will be performed in Zernez. Moreover, jubilee exhibition in National Park Cenre will be established on the ground floor. You will discover all the personalities who have contributed towards creating this unique nature reserve. Park also offers an interactive exhibition with 30 animated origami-style animals.
A full-time programme is also offered for the 1st of August.
