Base and Mid Layers

The right clothing is essential to ensure you have an enjoyable walk. The layer system of clothing will provide you with comfort and protection from the outdoor elements. It means you can change your layers according to the conditions and your exertion level.

Base layer is the closest to the skin. Generally, it should be synthetic, though merino wool will do too. Base layers are designed to wick the moisture away from your skin and out to the next layer, or if the weather is good, out to the fresh air. Whereas, cotton clothing keeps the moisture and you’ll get cold very soon. So, wear only synthetic tee-shirts or long-sleeved thermal shirts as well as synthetic shorts or trousers (or two-in-one zip-off trousers)! This will help to keep you warm and comfortable as having wet clothing next to the skin will draw the heat away from you body very quickly. Another important criteria, if you’re out on a long distance and want to keep clean without carrying too much kit, is that base layers are quick and easy to wash and dry quickly.

Mid layers provide the essential warmth that you need when out in the hills walking. For mid layer warmth and comfort, choose a fleece or a synthetic material. Moreover, check if mid-layers come lined with a wind-blocking membrane. It will save you from the wind without the need to put your outer waterproof jacket on. However, waterproof and windproof fleeces tend to weight more than simple fleece. So, the choice comes after you: whether you prefer a protection from wind and water or cosiness and lightness.
